2012 PowerNet Tour of Southland :: October 28 to November 3

..|_ CyclingSouthDATES CONFIRMED FOR THE 2012 POWERNET TOUR

The confirmed dates for this year’s Tour are Sunday 28th October – Saturday 3rd November 2012.  The 56th edition of the Tour of Southland will commence with the Prologue stage on Sunday afternoon with eight following stages, covering 900kms of the Southland region, and finishing back in Invercargill on the following Saturday.

Considerable changes were made to the Tour route last year and this year’s event will be raced over a very similar course.  Tour Manager, Bruce Ross said “that the changes made to the event last year were well received by all concerned and we are keen to retain last year’s route, bearing in mind that the penultimate stage, the individual time trial had to be cancelled last year due to unseasonal weather conditions.

ORGANISE YOUR TEAM FOR SOUTHLAND

With less than eight months until the 2012 PowerNet Tour of Southland cycle race begins, Tour Manager Bruce Ross is urging riders to organise their teams early to avoid the stress of having to make last minute arrangements.

With many New Zealand riders making an annual pilgrimage overseas to race, Ross said traditionally riders leave their Southland Tour arrangements to later in the year, which causes varying degrees of last minute panic.  My advice to riders intending to compete in this year’s event is to begin arranging your combinations now.

The Tour will be limited to 20 six-man teams.  Individual entries will be received and placed in composite teams at the Race Manager’s discretion, and as space allows.

The on-line entry form will be posted on this website in the near future.

TEAM SPONSORSHIP INVOLVEMENT

POWERNET’S LAST TOUR AS MAJOR SPONSOR

The 2012 PowerNet Tour will sadly be the last event conducted under the PowerNet banner.  PowerNet Limited became involved as the major sponsor in 2001 and with their tremendous support, the Tour of Southland has progressed dramatically and has developed into New Zealand’s multi stage race and a highlight of the Australasian road cycling calendar.

Tour Director, Bruce Ross said that “PowerNet’s involvement has been outstanding, not only as the major funder but also the huge amount of resources that they have supplied to the Tour during their tenure.  We have been very fortunate to have such a caring community Corporate involved with this iconic event and their presence has certainly enabled us to raise the bar continually and to develop the event to the status it now enjoys.  When PowerNet initially became involved there sponsorship was for a three year period so the extension of their sponsorship over the years has been greatly appreciated and during this time a professional partnership has developed.

Under the PowerNet influence, the Tour of Southland has developed markedly and is an event that provides an excellent product and outstanding opportunities for any future sponsors.  The Tour of Southland receives massive amounts of media exposure, including national and international television coverage and is an event that is eagerly awaited by the sport loving public.

ATKINS WINS 2011 TOUR

..|_ Josh Atkins crosses the line with Shane Archbold and Myron SimpsonChristchurch teenager Josh Atkins has etched his name in the history books as the youngest rider to be crowned the 2011 PowerNet Tour of Southland champion.

Atkins and his PowerNet team of young guns Tom Scully, Shane Archbold, Myron Simpson, Alex Frame and Cam Karwowski did a sublime job of controlling the Tour’s final stanza from Winton to Invercargill today, shutting down numerous attempts by nearest rival Pure Black Racing to wrestle the yellow jersey.

“I’m very stoked to pull it off for the team. They rode incredibly,” Atkins said. <read more>
